Todoist and Google Tasks in a single list for today

The short answer: both are read and shown as one list for today, not merged. Overdue and due-today Todoist tasks sit alongside Google Tasks in the day's plan, each labelled with where it came from. Nothing is copied from one manager to the other: duplicating tasks across services is the fastest way to stop trusting any list.

Why so many people end up with two managers

It is rarely untidiness. Usually one is imposed — work runs on Google Workspace, and tasks from an invitation land there — and the other is the one you chose because it has projects, labels and a decent phone app. As long as both lists exist, all that is missing is a view that reads them together when the day starts.

What you see, and where it comes from

• From Todoist: overdue and today. The connection is OAuth and read-only: tasks are displayed, not modified.
• From Google Tasks: the pending tasks of the connected account; here new tasks can be created, if you granted the actions permission.
• From iPhone Reminders: whatever the app syncs, for those who use it, also read-only.

Each item says where it came from. That looks like a small detail right up until the day you spend twenty minutes hunting for a task in the wrong manager.

How to decide which one to keep

If you are thinking about simplifying, one rule works well:

• Wherever tasks land without you typing them (from an invitation, from an email with an ask) is the manager you cannot switch off.
• Wherever you actually organise your week, with projects and reviews, is the one worth keeping.
• If they are the same place, you are done. If not, treat the first as an inbox and work in the second.

What we do not do

• We do not sync Todoist both ways. Today it is read-only; completing a Todoist task happens in Todoist.
• We do not invent a shared priority scheme. "P1" in Todoist and a Google task with no priority field are not comparable, so we do not fake a single scale.
• We do not turn tasks into events on our own. If a task needs room in the calendar, that is your call.

And the day one list becomes redundant

Disconnecting is fine. Removing an integration deletes nothing at the source: it simply stops being read and leaves the view. It is reversible, and it is one of the few productivity decisions you can test at no cost.
