Electricity prices and air quality, in the same glance as the weather

The electricity price right now, the cheapest slot left and your town's air quality and pollen, in the same glance as the weather. Each line can be turned off in Settings.

The short answer: from today the electricity price and air quality sit right next to the weather. On the web and in the iPhone app, under the hourly strip, there are two new lines: one with the electricity price right now and the cheapest slot left in the day, and another with the air quality and pollen for your town. If they are no use to you, a switch turns them off.

What the electricity line says

  • The price right now, in euros per kWh, and whether it is a cheap, average or expensive hour compared with the rest of the day.
  • The cheapest two-hour slot left today, to run the washing machine or charge something when it costs least.
  • Where it comes from: it is the PVPC, Spain's regulated tariff, published by Red Eléctrica through its public API. It is the same across Spain; only the time changes, and it is shown in yours (an hour earlier in the Canaries).

A fair warning: if your contract is a fixed-price one on the free market, this line does not apply to you. It only makes sense on the regulated tariff. That is why it can be switched off.

What the air line says

  • The European air quality index for the current hour: good, fair, moderate, poor, very poor or extremely poor, using the European Environment Agency's bands.
  • Whether any of the next twelve hours will be worse, and when.
  • Any pollen that is moderate or high over the next 24 hours: grass, olive, birch, alder, mugwort or ragweed. If none stands out, it just says "low pollen".

The data comes from the European Copernicus atmosphere service (CAMS), through Open-Meteo.

What is sent and what is not

For the air line, the approximate coordinates of your town are used, the same ones already used for the chance of rain. Red Eléctrica is only asked for the day's price: it receives nothing of yours. None of it is stored. It is all in the privacy policy.

How to turn it off

On the web, Settings → Weather → Alongside the weather; on the iPhone, Settings → Panels. They are two separate switches: you can keep the air and drop the electricity, or the other way round. If you turn them off, the data is not even requested.

It fits with the daily summary: what changes your morning, in a single glance. More on forecasts, warnings and your surroundings in the weather section.

Frequently asked questions

Is the electricity price useful if I have a fixed tariff?
No. It is the regulated price (PVPC) published by Red Eléctrica. If your contract is a fixed-price one on the free market, you pay the same at any hour and you can switch the line off in Settings.
Where does the air and pollen data come from?
From the European Copernicus atmosphere service (CAMS), through Open-Meteo, for your town's coordinates. The index is the European air quality index.
Does Madrugo store any of this?
No. It is looked up when your summary is prepared and is not stored. Red Eléctrica is sent nothing of yours and Open-Meteo only your town's approximate coordinates.
